The lobby of this 1982 commercial building is renovated to heighten its visual impact on the exterior and interior of a Tysons Corner landmark. By removing a solid spandrel to expose the two-story volume, juxtaposing finishes, and introducing lighting, spatial relationships are clarified and the lobby achieves a brilliant contemporary expression. Precise stainless-steel panels are contrasted with the sinuous curve of the staircase and new Venetian-stucco of the wall beyond. Stainless-steel and bronze supports at stair rails, directional floor patterns, strategically dropped ceiling planes, and luminous elevator cabs and building directory reinforce the precise, machined image of the remodeled lobby.
