B|HA Hosts Externship for University of Virginia Architecture Students
With 5 University of Virginia alumni currently on our team, we were very excited to host a week-long externship for two students from the School of Architecture: Audrey Liu, a second year MArch candidate, and Rhett Lin, a fourth year undergraduate student. The externship provides a glimpse into the professional life of a designer in an architecture firm with exposure to all aspects of practice. B|HA Senior Associate and project team leader Jack Devilbiss, AIA and Project Architects Andy Murray, AIA, Liz Duray, AIA and Ashley Grzywa, AIA took Audrey and Rhett for site visits to 7 D.C. residential renovation construction sites: 1360 Peabody St; 3032 Q St, NW; 3012 Q St, NW; 3016 Dumbarton St; Carver and Slowe Halls; and the Maycroft Apartments.
Audrey and Rhett honed their drawing skills with sketching, presentation drawing preparation, participating in schematic design, construction document modification and construction administration shop drawing review on several active and recently completed works, listened to supplier educational presentations, and participated in client meetings and conversations with the partners and team members.
On Wednesday, January 9 in our 14th Street studio, B|HA celebrated Extern Week with most of the locally-placed externs, their hosts, and School of Architecture Alumni Foundation Director Joseph Pierce and Kim Wong Haggart, Director of Engagement and Alumni Initiatives. Special thanks to Betsy Roettger, Assistant Dean of Students, Career Development/ Lecturer for consistently running an extremely thoughtful and well-executed program.
Thank you, Audrey and Rhett, for all your help last week! Best of luck with the spring semester. David Haresign, FAIA (BS Arch 1976) and Wenpu Chai (MArch 2017) will see you in the spring at Campbell Hall for Career Connects.
